Safety Tips

Dating Safely on Chosn
Meeting new people should feel exciting, not stressful. Most members are here for the same reason you are, but a little caution goes a long way. These tips will help you protect yourself online and in person. We encourage you to read them before your first conversation, and to come back to them any time something feels off.
No safety advice can prevent every bad situation, and you are never responsible for someone else's behavior. Still, the habits below put more control in your hands.
Protecting Yourself Online
- Keep conversations on Chosn. Stay on the platform while you are getting to know someone. People who quickly push to move to text, email, or another app may be trying to avoid our safety tools
- Guard your personal information. Do not share your home address, workplace, daily routine, or financial details until you know and trust someone. Be mindful of details in your photos too, like a house number or a work badge
- Video chat before you meet. A quick video call helps confirm that the person matches their photos and is who they say they are. If someone always has an excuse to avoid video, treat that as a red flag
- Take your time. There is no rush. Anyone worth meeting will respect your pace
Spotting Romance Scams
Scammers can be patient and convincing. Be cautious if someone:
- Professes strong feelings unusually fast, often before you have met
- Asks you for money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or your banking details, for any reason
- Has a story full of emergencies, like a sudden medical bill, travel problem, or business crisis
- Always has a reason they cannot video chat or meet in person
- Tries to move you to another platform right away, or sends links asking you to invest
Never send money or share financial information with someone you have met online, no matter how compelling their story is. If a match asks, stop, do not pay, and report them.
Meeting in Person
When you are ready to meet, set yourself up for a safe first date:
- Meet in public. Choose a busy, public place like a cafe or restaurant for your first few dates. Avoid private homes or remote locations until you trust each other
- Tell a friend your plans. Let someone you trust know where you are going, who you are meeting, and when you expect to be back. Consider sharing your live location with them
- Arrange your own transportation. Get yourself to and from the date so you can leave whenever you want and you are not relying on your date to know where you live
- Stay sober and aware. Keep a clear head on early dates, watch your drink, and never leave food or drinks unattended
- Keep your phone charged. Make sure you can call for help or a ride if you need to
Trust Your Instincts
Your gut is one of your best safety tools. If something feels wrong, you do not need a reason to act on it.
- If a conversation makes you uncomfortable, you can stop responding at any time
- If a date feels unsafe or just off, it is okay to leave early. You owe no one an explanation
- If you feel pressured, manipulated, or rushed, step back and take the space you need
- If you are ever in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services right away
Reporting and Blocking
Help us keep Chosn safe for everyone. If someone breaks our rules or makes you uncomfortable, use the tools built into the app:
- Block a member to immediately stop them from contacting you or seeing your profile. They are not told that you blocked them
- Report a profile or message to flag behavior that breaks our guidelines. Reports are confidential, and our team reviews every one
Reporting helps us act before someone can hurt others. To learn more about what we do and do not allow, read our Community Guidelines. You can also reach our team directly at hello@chosn.co.
