Best U.S. Cities for Childfree Adults in 2026
Where you live shapes your life. For childfree adults, the right city means access to great restaurants, cultural experiences, outdoor activities, and—most importantly—a community that gets it.
We analyzed cities based on factors that matter most to the childfree community: cost of living without kid-related expenses, nightlife and dining scenes, career opportunities, dating pools, and overall quality of life for adults without children.
Our Methodology
To build this ranking, we evaluated cities across six weighted criteria using publicly available data:
Dining & Nightlife
Restaurant and bar density per capita, sourced from Yelp's State of the Restaurant Industry report and WalletHub's Best Foodie Cities rankings.
Career Opportunities
Job market strength and median household income from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Census Bureau's American Community Survey.
Dating Scene
Proportion of single and childfree adults using U.S. Census fertility data and Pew Research surveys on childlessness.
Cost of Living
Cost of living indices from Numbeo and BLS Consumer Price Index. Evaluated relative to median income, not raw cost alone.
Outdoor Activities
Proximity to natural amenities based on the Trust for Public Land's ParkScore Index and geographic assessment.
Walkability & Transit
Walk Score and Transit Score data for each metro area. Higher walkability reduces car dependence and aligns with urban childfree lifestyles.
Each city received a composite score across all six categories. The final ranking reflects the total weighted score. No single factor could carry a city to the top — a strong showing required balance across multiple criteria.
